DUBAI PARKS AND RESORTS : A Different Point of View

A different point of view at the sheer scale of Dubai Parks and Resorts ( DPR ) offers a video, I took while driving by the huge construction site south of Dubai.

3 theme parks and waterpark are being built simultaneously on 25 million square feet of sand.

Even you can not see clearly the inside of the theme parks, this drive-by recording, shows the beginning of the theme parks “marked” by the tallest structure build so far – the Rajmahal Theatre ( on the very left ), followed by blue building which is Dreamworks indoor section of Motiongate theme park.

You can also see, that all images from the hoarding disappeared and most importantly, notice the construction of the bridges and roadworks connecting the highway from both sides.

13.000 workers are currently on site of the theme parks, Lapita hotel and Riverland entrance plaza.

The resort will be open October 2016. Watch amazing construction video HERE

DUBAI : Airport’s expansion project sneak peek into Concourse D

Dubai International’s latest expansion, the construction of Concourse D in Terminal 1 is opening for its first flight on Wednesday 24th Feb.

I could preview this brand new and shiny Terminal which increases capacity at the Dubai airport to 90 million passengers a year and bringing big photo gallery for you to enjoy.

A train connecting Concourse D with Concourse C in Terminal 1 is already operating and 17 gates will accommodate over 100 airlines.

A total of $7.8 billion has been invested in expanding Dubai International.

In my opinion, it is a huge improvement compare to old Terminal 1. Its airy layout offers unobstructed views at the aircrafts taking off, amazing selection of F&B outlets, enough seating by the gates and charging stations for your gadgets. The shopping areas are enormous.

My only comments pointing towards the Gate corridors, as they feel a bit “warehousy”  (because of the ceiling ) and also, it wasn’t easy to find the way out.

I guess few extra signages will fix this and hopefully all the visitors will apppreciate this new gateway to Dubai.

Enjoy the video & photos

CAMBODIA : Discover the Ancient World of Angkor / GUIDE

CAmIt took me many years to finally make the decision, to pack my bags and “hit the road” to discover the mysterious ancient temples of Angkor in Cambodia.

Armed with a DK guide and mixed expectations, my journey started at Dubai Airport with a stopover in Singapore Changi before with flying with Silk Air to Siem Reap Intl. Airport.

This cute little airport is serving over 3mil. passengers annually.

The Kingdom of Cambodia is a country located in the Southeast of Asia. Its total landmass is 181,035 square kilometres (69,898 sq mi),and it’s bordered by Thailand, Laos and Vietnam.

With a population of over 15 million, Cambodia is the 70th most populated country in the world.

Most visitors, myself included, travel to Cambodia to fulfil a travel bucket list dream, to see one of the largest and most amazing religious monuments in the world…Angkor Wat. It is located near the city of Siem Reap (meaning “Defeat of Siam”) and has a population of around 180.000 people.

Siem Reap is a lovely city with a busy centre filled with markets (Psar chaa/Central Market ), restaurants and bars ( Pub Street ). Besides exploring the temples you can take cooking classes or visit the War Museum to learn about Cambodia’s troubled past under the Khmer Rouge.

I would recommend a stay in one of the small hotels in the city centre, to really enjoy everything within easy walking distance. Big international chains are opening many hotels, but they nearly all located on the outskirts of the city.

Planning Your Trip :

  • The best months to visit Angkor Wat are November to February. The weather is pleasantly warm with no rain. As this is peak holiday season, expect crowds and of course higher prices for accommodation.
  • Main Entrance to Ankgor complex takes 20 min ( 7 km ) ride by tuk tuk
  • Entry Pass is to be paid in US Dollars. US$20/1 day, US$40/3days and US$60/one week
  •  Always carry you Entry Pass with you
  • Angkor Wat opens at 5am for sunrise and closes at 6pm
  • Allow a minimum of 2 days to see the most interesting  temples in Angkor area.
  • Hire a local guide with knowledge of the best photo angles and most importantly, who knows the crowd timings, so you can enjoy the temples almost on your own ( I can recommend a good one )
  • Rent a motorbike and explore the amazing country side and discover remotely located temples/ruins and feel like the real adventurer.
  • You will need to apply for an e-VISA online HERE / US$37
  • Direct flights from major Asian Cities. Best from Singapore, Bangkok, or Kuala Lumpur.  Read HERE review of Silk Air

Angkor Wat Temple :

The Worlds’ largest religious monument and an architectural masterpiece.

The colossal temple with 5 towers rising 55m above the ground is filled with mythological carvings, mysterious corridors, and chambers with spectacular Hindu decor.

Angkor Wat was built in the first half of the 12th century and constructed by King Suryavarman II within a 30 year period.

As you would expect, it is an extremely popular place, so prepare to be patient as there will be crowds. The temple is at its most stunning during sunrise and sunset.

You can explore for up to 5 hours and still not see everything. Be sure cover your shoulders while if you want to enter the temple.

The entire Angkor area contains over 50 temples . I have visited 16 of them and 8 of my favourites are described in this post below.

Bayon Temple at Ankor Thom :

The last city of Khmer Empire is located 2km from Angkor Wat and contains two adjacent temples.

The main temple Bayon, features  gigantic serene and smiling stone faces on the many towers.  It needs to be seen to believe it.  Build in the late 12th century.

The best time to visit is the morning as most of the crowds are enjoying sunrise at the Angkor Wat.

Ta Prohm Temple :

Ta Prohm is a popular temple on the tourist map because it was featured in the Tomb Raider film.

Gigantic roots are intertwined with ancient structures and crumbling stones overgrowing lengthy corridors. It gets your imagination running and I wish the walls can reveal all their secrets.

Don’t miss this place during you stay at Siem Reap! It’s only 7km away from Angkor Wat.

Banteay Srei Temple :

This 10th century temple is over 35 kms away from Siem Reap and best is to include in a full day motorbike tour.

Like that, you can experience the real Cambodia. Picturesque countryside with little children playing, farmers with water buffalo’s and women making palm-sugar candy by the road.

Temple is made from pink sandstone with many extraordinary carvings of mythical creatures. The statues of sitting monkeys are extremely photogenic.

Pre Rup Temple :

This “ temple mountain” was made of brick, laterite and sandstone in 10th century and its name means “turn the body”.

Funerals were conducted at the temple, with the ashes of the body being ritually rotated in different directions.

The tallest squared pyramid, measuring 50 m at its base, rises in three steep tiers in height to a 35 m , offering a great view especially during sunset.

Most importantly, Pre Rup is less busy than other temples, so enjoy the tranquility and great photo opportunities. Easy to reach within 20min ( 9 km ) from Angkor Wat.

Beng Mealea Temple :

My favorite temple, largely unrestored, with trees and thick brush thriving amidst its towers and courtyards. For years it was difficult to reach, but a road recently built brings more visitors to the site. It is an official UNESCO heritage site.

Built in 12th century and now concealed in a thick jungle, covered with cobwebs and dust. All of that makes this big temple the perfect “playground” for adventurers.

To access the best parts, you need to climb over piles or stones, climb up walls and swing around trees . It’s like in the movie, but the real thing.

Best to enjoy as a part of motorbike full day tour as it is 77km away from Siem Reap.

Chau Srei Vibol :

Remotely located and hidden ruins with unique atmosphere guarantees, that you will have the entire place for yourself.

Don’t expect delicate murals but climbing, crawling and exploring every corner without limitations.

You can include this temple in motorbike day tour which in my opinion is the best way to experience more of this unique country and its people. Bring some crayons, note pads,or  sweets for kids.

Located 60km away from Angor Wat.

Ta Keo Temple :

Its particularly massive appearance is due to the absence of external decorations, as carving had just begun when the works stopped around 10th Century.

It was first ever temple build entirely from sandstone in a shape of a 5 tier pyramid.

Ta Keo isn’t the best temple,or the most visited, but great way how to escape the crowds of Angkor Wat, that’s why is so worthwhile. Only 6km from Angkor Wat.

PARIS : Triangle d’Or Hotel REVIEW ***

“Bienvenue à Paris”

Where : Paris / France

Click for Location and Website  / 40 min from CDG Airport approx. €70

Overview :

Hotel du Triangle d’Or is a boutique property with a quirky music theme. Drum tables, Wall of Fame and endless musical details thru the entire building.

Located only few minutes walk from famous Madeleine Sq. in a trendy area full of shops, cafes and sights.

I really enjoyed the walking distance to many places such a Louvre Museum , Galleries Lafayette, Place Vendome, Place de la Concorde, or Opera Garnier.

Lobby with reception has funky neon lit desk and offers earphones so you can sample some latest hits. The Check-In procedure was very quick and reception staff very welcoming.

The Hotel doesn’t have a big sign outside so you need to look carefully, when you arrive.

Room :

Surprisingly,  this hotel has one of the largest double rooms available compared to other hotels that I have visited within this price range. The room contains multifunctional work desk with and wardrobe in a shape of music equipment box.

Flat TV, safe, A/C, minibar, enough storage room, reliable Wi-Fi connection and complete black-out curtains.

The only negative thing was the bedlinen, very hard and almost “scratchy” , but I informed the Reception and it was no problem to change it.  Also, if you prefer soft mattress, this bed will not be your “best friend”.

Note, that the windows in all Parisian hotels doesn’t isolate noise from the street much. Bring your ear plugs.

Service :

During your stay you’ll mostly be interacting with either the Reception or wait staff who take care of breakfast, I found both to be very friendly and welcoming. The Receptionists were always in a good spirits, ready to help and always with a smile on their face. I felt more like a friend than a guest, which was a nice surprise…especially in Paris.

For that reason I will definitely be back in Triangle d’Or !

Facilites :

Steam room and Massage ( book in advance )

Dining :

Breakfast area at the back of the ground  floor offers basic but satisfying selection of bread, cold cuts, eggs, yogurts and fruit.

Freshly made coffee will get you ready for a busy the day in Paris.

Who is it for :

Pretty much for everyone who wants to explore this great city and looking for a good “value for money”place to stay. Ideal for sightseeing or business trip alike.

What makes it special :

  • great location
  • quiet side street
  • spacious room
  • very friendly personel

Not so good :

  • hard bed and bedlinen
  • car noise from the street ( in the morning )

Practical INFO

Free Wi-Fi / Breakfast included / Metro Stations – Madeleine & Opera / many restaurants and boulangeries near by / great area for shopping and sightseeing

Tips for Trips

Beautiful Toulieries Gardens – 10min walk away / Rue St.Honore for some luxury shopping – 5min / Disneyland Paris 60min by Metro & RER train

DUBAI : 9 exciting attractions opening in 2016 !

A very exciting year ahead for Dubai and its visitors. Many projects are getting into the final stages of development and we can all look forward to world class theme parks, entertainment and attractions.

The below list is based on my personal observations and I can confidently say that these 9 projects will be open before the year’s end.

1. Dubai Parks & Resorts / Theme Parks

Currently the most exciting project consisting of 3 theme parks and 1 waterpark.

Motiongate, Legoland, Bollywood Land and Lego Waterpark are being build in Jebel Ali south of Dubai.

Over 100 attractions, shopping plaza, hotel and world class shows.

Read all about it in my previous posts. Click HERE & HERE

Opening : October 2016

2. IMG World’s of Adventure / Theme Park

The biggest indoor theme park in the world will contain 4 zones and multiplex.

Marvel, Lost Valley, Cartoon Network and IMG Boulevard will span over 1.5 million feet. The launch style  Dinosaur themed rollercoaster is already built. Animatronic Dinosaurs have been delivered after touring around the city, before arriving in their new home next to the Global Vilage.

Opening : 15th August 2016

3. Dubai Safari Park / Zoo

Finally, all the animals currently in Dubai Zoo will have spacious new home in Dubai Safari Park opposite Dragon Mart. The entire area is quickly taking shape and is clearly visible from the plane upon approach into Dubai International Airport.

Safari style, open planes and Butterfly dome promises fun and educational day out.

Opening : September 2016

4. Opera House / Entertainment

New centre of performing arts, the 2000-seat multi functional venue is located next to Burj Khalifa in Dubai Downtown.

All the scaffolding was just taken down and the entire building is suppose to resemble the shape of the traditional sailing vessel (  Dhow )

In my humble opinion, the exterior design isn’t very impressive, but who know’s what secrets the interior will hold. Watch this space.

Opening : 1st August 2016

5. Dubai Frame / Attraction

This new observation gimmick is standing at 150m and it is positioned in such a way that landmarks of modern Dubai can be seen on one side, while from the other side, visitors can view older parts of the city

It takes very long time to finish this apparently simple structure. Perhaps there is more to it, but so far the frame in now being painted and cladding is taking place.

Click HERE to see the full construction update.

Opening : December 2016

6. City Walk Outdoor Mall / Shopping

A Modern, outdoor and architecturally interesting mall concept its nearly ready to welcome the public.

Together with residential area, entertainment zone, LED canopy’s and hotels this should quickly become the place to be seen.

Opening : March 2016

7. Bio Dome / Attraction

Part of the soon to be open City Walk Mall, this educational attraction will bring rainforest into the heart of Dubai.

Click HERE to read all about it in previous post.

Opening : September 2016

8. The Pointe Palm Jumeirah / Shopping

Similar to The Beach development on JBR Beach in Dubai Marina, this waterfront dinning destination on the tip of the Palm Jumeirah, will offer unique views of Atlantis Hotel and 100 restaurants.

It’s not just the food what will bring you here, spectacular offshore fountains in the bay and retail outlets  to entice impulsive shopper.

Opening : December 2016

9. Dragon Water Theatre / Entertainment

I can’t wait for this one! Dubai will have its own 1.300 seat Las Vegas styled permanent water theatre.

Designed and choreographed by the one and only Franco Dragone, the original director of the best Cirque du Soleil shows.

The circular shaped theatre is currently being finalised inside the new St. Regis hotel and if you believe the rumours, the cast is already rehearsing in one of the warehouses in Al Qouz.

Opening : December 2016

Most of the construction sites are difficult to visit and take a photo. Note, that the Satellite images aren’t up to date and are only illustrative.

DOHA / Qatar : Grand Hyatt Hotel REVIEW *****

Lives up to its name in every way…

Where : Doha / Qatar

Click for location and website   /  30-50min from Hamad Intl. Airport ( approx 75QR Karwa Taxi )

Overview :

The Grand Hyatt Doha is an upscale property, with private beach and heavy palatial feel.

Located away from the traffic jam packed Doha centre and next to the newly developing artificial island complex called The Pearl-Qatar. Lagoona Mall is just across the road and the Financial centre of Doha only 10 minutes drive.

Rich and opulent Arabic decor, subtle colours and lot’s of marble. Hotel has it’s own 400 metres beach, perfectly manicured gardens,  ideal for a cup of Arabic coffee in the shade of palm trees.

This place is ideal for leisure,or business travellers alike.

Room :

Spacious, bright, modern and very comfortable. Sea View King Room comes with a big terrace and loungers. It was pleasant to watch the sunset and observe airplanes on approach to near by Hamad Int. Airport while sipping lovely tea.

Room contains King size luxury bed with wonderfully soft bedlinen, working desk and seating area.

Bathroom with walk-in rain shower, marble bathtub and nice toiletries was spacious and very elegant.

Enough storage space, sockets, iron, safe, minibar and tea/coffee facility, socket adapter…all practically placed and easy to use.

Wi-Fi could be a bit faster but was ok. The old Iphone docking station should be changed for a new type.

Service :

Efficient and delicate. One of the fastest Check-in I have ever experienced and the staff ready to deal with any wish you may have.

Facilities :

I was stunned with the size of Jaula Spa. It almost felt too big, but I guess that’s what luxury is all about. Different types of saunas, steam, jacuzzi, indoor pool and outdoor pools.

Professionally equipped fitness centre, kids corner and water sport area at the beach.

Dining / Entertainment :

  • Biscotti Pastry shop
  • Isaac Thai Restaurant
  • Rocca Restaurant  – by the pool
  • Dunes Bar – with big selection of wines
  • Grill Restaurant – all day dining / Buffet Breakfast*
  • Majlis Arabic cafe

*Breakfast is adequate, not the best I have experienced, but with plenty of fresh fruits, juices, omelette station and beautiful outdoor area, perfect during the pleasant winter months.

For leisure and business travellers. It’s a quite green oasis ideal for a long weekend on the beach and some shopping in near by malls.

REVIEW : 12 good reasons why to fly with SILK AIR

Singapore Airlines regional wing – Silk Air is surprisingly comfortable and reliable way how to explore 49 destinations across Asia.

This small boutique airline operates fleet of 29 aircrafts. B737 , A319 and A320.

Silk Air is not low budget carrier such a Tiger Air, or Air Asia and offers full service, business class and 30kg of baggage allowance!

I got lucky and my latest flight SIN-HKT was on brand new B737 with Sky Interior Cabin.  The below points reflecting my experience based on this aircraft.

Why should YOU consider Silk Air for your next flight …

  1. 32″ seat pitch
  2. clean, bright with nice seat colour theme
  3. pleasant cabin crew
  4. full meal service on a flight below 2 hours
  5. free soft and alcoholic beverages
  6. selection of seat during booking process
  7. on time departure
  8. on board entertainment system you download into personal mobile device
  9. 30kg baggage allowance for no extra fee
  10. pillows and blankets available
  11. shared frequent flyer program with Singapore Airlines
  12. complimentary newspaper

     Not so good :

  • I cant’ help it, but I do miss personal TV
  • downloadable entertainment system doesn’t have a good choice of channels.

Ground service was quick and efficient and I have even got offered emergency seat for no extra charge. For those flying business class can use Singapore Airlines business lounge.

I personally didn’t like the brown seats ( 40″ seat pitch )

Service on board was very quick and the crew went thru the cabin few times with refreshments after meal service.

Of course, flying with Silk Air doesn’t have the price tag of Air Asia, but if you looking for quality with no bad surprises, safety and comfort … Silk Air is a very good choice.
